「コンピューターの普及が記憶の外部化を可能にした時、あなたたちはその意味を、もっと真剣に考えるべきだった」

ここでやはり思い出すのは映画「攻殻機動隊」のこのセリフです。立花隆氏と映画監督の押井守氏の対談で、押井監督は記憶について次のように語ってます。

人間の記憶って実は、概ね捏造するわけですよね。（中略）
だから人間の存在の大部分が記憶に依存しているんだとすれば、自分のオリジナルみたいなものは、実は記憶それ自体にあるわけじゃなくて、記憶を捏造する過 程自体にあるんじゃないかという。いろんなデータを結びつけて、あのとき自分はどうだったああだった。あの人はこういう人だったとかね。自分はその人に対 してこういう感情を持っていたとか、それは10年20年経つとやっぱり都合よく変ってくるわけなんですけど、そこの変ってくるプロセス自体が実は自分なん だという。

これはデータはいくら蓄積してもただのデータであり、それが自分の興味をひきつけた文脈、自分がそれをどのようにして受け止めたのかという「余白の注釈」が実は大事だということでもあります。

子供の頃に好きだったものを数十年後に見返して、「あれ？ なにかが違う」と思うとき、それはオリジナルを前にした自分が変化しているからですが、データだけを保存して「過去がそこにある」と思っていると、こうした印象は手をすり抜けていってしまうかもしれません。
